Rules and FAQ

Rules

1. Golden Rule - Treat people the way you want to be treated. It's pretty simple. Don't wank, don't powergame, don't gloryhog, etc. You all know the basic rules, and if not...

2. Use Common Sense - In a game with magic and no mechanics, there's a lot of flexibility in what you can do with your characters. I won't be heavily moderating everyone's posts and threads to hammer down little nitpicks about the setting or if a spell is probably too powerful for that person to learn unless there's some egregious powergaming going on. The point of a game is to have fun, so feel free to be creative with the setting -- just don't try to break or "win" the game.

3. Muncesting - It's allowed, with limits! As long as you're not cheating or glorifying one character with another, feel free to play two characters in the same scene. If it enhances RP and makes the game more fun, then by all means.

4. Character Limits - None. Play as many as you think you can handle. Character squatters might have their characters booted, but that's done on a case-by-case basis. Use the drop post when you need to, there's no shame in that if you're just not feeling your character anymore.

5. Rating - There's no hard limit on the rating. Sex is fine, violence is fine, cursing is fine. Just don't go too overboard! It's not a kink or a horror game. Add the appropriate labels and locks wherever necessary.

FAQs

If each hexagon on the map is only five miles, how are characters supposed to handle travel to faraway places?
Up to you! Foot is the slowest method, but travel by horse is common. Flight is faster, teleportation faster yet, though your character may need to find someone who can make use of those two methods. Other methods may be available in the future, so stay tuned and watch that quest board!

What's this about writing a legend/prophecy about my character?
You have the option of creating a magical destiny for your character, which might be used for future plots. Mazir (the King's Holy Man) knows most of these legends, but might not recognize that your character is the subject until it becomes obvious. This is just a fun option, and it's absolutely not required, so you can skip it if you're uninspired or come up with one later.

I want to know more about one of the locations on the map, but there's nothing about it on the settings page!
You can always ask the mod about certain areas if you plan on having your character pass through or around that area. Even if that's not the case, you can still ask. Just don't get carried away -- the mod has plans for a lot of places, but definitely not all of them, and some places are left blank so ideas can be added later. You can also make requests to have certain features in one of those locations. For example, if you say you want to mess around with pirates, I'll tell you which location(s) would be most suitable for that kind of encounter.

Is it feasible to play a villain character in this game?
Boy howdy, it's definitely feasible! There are plenty of NPC villains (and hopefully some PC ones too!) that can form alliances and support other villains, or even serve as an antagonist. Villains are pretty infamous for not getting along, after all. You're free to create your own schemes and plots, and unless those plots involve heavy/permanent damage to the setting, you don't need to run everything past a mod. However, if you want to plan something with the mod or need advice/help, feel free to let me know! Playing a bad guy should be just as fun as playing a hero, if not moreso, and I'm happy to enable you in any way I can.

Can I create my own faction?
Yes! Guilds, factions, clubs, whatever you want. You can have NPCs join, or allow other characters to join. IC solicitation can also be a lot of fun if you want to do the extra legwork. Any approved faction will be listed on the Factions page with the necessary details.

How much can I affect the setting?
A lot. You can ask for locations to be added to the map, add features to existing settings (if your character builds a new inn or you want the town to have a public brothel for example), add/request monsters for the bestiary, AND SO MUCH MORE! You're also allowed to write your own entries and submit pictures where necessary.

What happens to a character if a player drops them?
They don't 'go home,' that's for sure! A player who drops a character has the option of informing the others what their character is doing. They might be wandering the world, or chilling at home, or straight up dead. If they don't specify, and if your character had significant CR with the dropped character, you can take the liberties you need to keep your character from getting stuck or screwed over. Should a dropped character possess an important item (especially if it's for metaplot purposes), ask the mod first before your character claims it. If a new player wants to pick up a character that was previously dropped, they have the option of continuing that character's story or just straight up replacing that character with a new version. Ask if you're not sure what your options are!

I'm apping a character that needs a modern-day item or power supply to function, what do I do? WHAT DO I DO???
Ask the mod! A robot who needs to recharge could make friends with someone who casts lightning magic. Substitutes could exist somewhere in the world. There are too many possibilities that have to be tailored for specific characters to be listed. We'll figure something out!

Someone else signed up for a quest, but they're squatting on it. I really wanted to do that quest! Can I have it instead?
It's entirely possible that two people embark on the same quest, so if someone is unresponsive to playing out the quest and you can play something out, then maybe your character just happened to get there first, hooray! To be courteous, give someone at least two weeks to make progress on a claimed quest, but know that a quest won't be taken away if they're just slow taggers. Signing up for a quest only to handwave or ignore it means someone else might claim that quest instead, so don't claim a quest unless you intend to take some initiative with it.

Can I apply for a dead character? Do OU characters notice if someone gets snapped up by a portal?
Unfortunately, the magic that's yanking people from other worlds doesn't have the power to bring them back to life. They'd get dropped into a field dead as a doornail! You can have the portal appear just before a character dies if you like, and you're free to choose the point in canon when they're spirited away to Vallaress. A character's absence does get noticed by others from that universe, so enjoy the potential fallout that might cause.

Can an AU and OU character exist at the same time?
Yes. Characters from an OU are also free to double take at an AU character they know. Does it mean anything? Or is it just a freaky coincidence? It's a mystery indeed.
